Free mental health helplines in Ghana

If your mind feels too heavy right now, you don’t have to wait until it gets worse. In Ghana you can talk to a trained person for free, day or night.

Talk to someone now

0800 678 678

Mental Health Authority helpline. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day. In danger right now? Call 112.

The national helpline: 0800 678 678

Ghana’s Mental Health Authority runs a toll-free helpline that is open 24 hours a day, every day of the week.1 It is free to call and confidential. The people who answer offer emotional support and psychological first aid, and if you need more, they can point you to a specialist or a service in your community.2

You don’t need to be in a crisis to call. The Authority says people phone from all 16 regions about depression, anxiety, heavy thoughts, and even help to stop gambling.3

What happens when you call

  1. Someone answers and listens. You can start with “I’m not okay” and take it from there. You don’t need the right words.
  2. They help you through the moment. That might mean slowing down your breathing, talking through what happened, or making a plan for tonight.
  3. They help with next steps. If it would help, they can refer you to a counsellor, a clinic or a hospital near you.2

The line is for mental health support only. The Authority asks people not to call it for money or other help.3

If someone is in danger right now

Call 112, Ghana’s emergency number, or go with them to the nearest hospital. Stay with them until help arrives.

Where else you can get care

Ghana has three public psychiatric hospitals: Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Pantang Hospital in Accra, and Ankaful Hospital near Cape Coast.1 You don’t have to travel to one of them to get help. The Mental Health Authority says psychiatric units and government health facilities across the country can support people in distress, and you can walk in.4 A nurse or doctor at your nearest clinic is a good place to start.

You can reach the Authority’s office on 0303 964 878 or info@mha.gov.gh for general questions. For support, use the helpline.1

Calling for someone else

You can call the helpline about a friend, a child or a parent you’re worried about. If they agree, call together and put it on speaker. Read what to say when someone says “I’m not okay” before you start.
